On my first archery hunt in Colorado I had decided to hunt at a place called Platoro. Its a nice place with decent hunting opportunities. I hadn't counted on the weather being so hot. It was running above ninety degrees. The deer were not moving at all and after several days I decided to take a doe if the opportunity presented itself. I didn't want to go back totally empty handed. We had hunted hard all morning and decided to go to Platoro to eat at the cafe. We loaded into the trucks and started up the dirt road. We were just relaxing and talking and not really paying much attention to the hillside when we spotted several deer running across the road ahead of us. I had my bow in the back so I slipped out of the truck, grabbed my bow and started stalking the deer down the hillside. It was a steep grade and I could hardly keep my footing. I stalked to within thirty yards of a doe and prepared to take the shot. I hadn't planned for or practiced a shot on this steep of an incline. I shot high and hit the doe in the upper back. The Muzzy broadhead took out about three inches of her spine just as if I had used a meat saw. The deer dropped in her tracks but fell, tumbled, and slid quite a ways down the slope. We retrieved her and went on to the cafe. That was my first deer with a bow and my first archery mule deer.
