RACE FOR THE HIGH GROUND

I was hunting on the Lake Farm with my dad. The upper hills seemed promising so we hunted there for a couple of days. I hadn't seen anything all morning and I thought I would check with dad to see if he had seen anything. I circled over the hill and finally located him. He was sitting by a fence watching a lower trail. I asked if he had seen anything and he stated he had, He said a nice buck and a couple of does had winded him and ran off down the trail in front of us. He went on to explain how he had encountered the deer and then he ended with "and they just left a couple of minutes before you came along". This stunned me for a few seconds since I knew where the trail crossed the ridge. I started running across the upper field and down through the trees to a secluded grassy area where the trail crosses. I knew that if I was going to have a chance to get this buck, I had to beat him to the ridge. The first one there could see anything that moved. I rounded the last stand of trees as a doe broke the tree line and was running across the ridge. As I dropped to one knee a second doe exploded from the trees. I got set and here he came. He made a couple of big jumps and was at full speed when I hit him. He folded in the grass and was down. As I approached him he raised up on his front legs and tried to hit me with his antlers. I grabbed his antlers from behind and finished him with my knife. He was a nice 7 point. This one I really had to work for.
